19th.c. Blonde Turtle Shell
Good example of a 19th.c. 'blonde' loggerhead turtle shell. Measuring 25" x 20". Good condition, solid and complete with only minor marks and wear.
Prized by 18th and 19th century sailors for their meat, the leftover turtle's shell were often presented to the crew who to occupy idle moments would remove the patterned outer layers and polish the bone carapace below to a smooth white finish. The resulting shell would be presented to loved ones as an unusual and decorative souvenir. We have had several shells over the years, often with links to the port of Liverpool.
