17th.c Oak Settle c.1680
Superb late 17th.c. oak settle c.1680. Very nearly six feet long. Five flat panels to the backrest below a simple carved frieze to the top rail and with moulded mullions and rear stiles. Note also the little initials carved in to three of the panels (probably relating to previous owners of the settle). Simple shaped arms with delightful repeated star detail stamped on the upper edges and raised on fine turned front stiles. Two plank board seat over a front rail with carving repeated from the backrest. Raised on turned front supports joined with the original stretcher, worn by countless feet over the years. Some previous restorations to the left hand arm, reinforcing to the back and at the bottom of the rear stiles. Excellent condition and particularly good colour and patina. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
This settle was on display for many years at Aberconwy House, the medieval merchant's house in Conwy run by the National Trust.
