Welsh Landscape Painting by Edmund Gill Dated 1861

Good sized 19th.c. oil painting on canvas by the English artist Edmund Gill (1820-1894) dated 1861. Waterfalls were a speciality of Gill and here he presents a view of Rhaeadr Du (the Black Falls) of Dolgellau in North Wales. Very well painted with lovely treatment of the white water, note the pale mist of spray above the falls. Interesting to note how much less wooded the scene is than today allowing a view of the mountains and sky. Signed in the lower left hand corner of the canvas and dated 1861. Presented in the original large gilded wood and gesso frame. Hand written label on the rear inscribed signed and dated by Gill which intriguingly also refers to a journal entry (part 4, page 84). Presented as found, condition is good but would doubtless benefit from a clean.
