Bronze Sculpture of Hector Berlioz by Claude Grange c.1950.

Fabulous bronze sculpture of the French Romantic composer and conductor Hector Berlioz by the sculptor Claude Grange c.1950. Modelled as the Romantic hero lost in thought about his work, head bowed and dramatically framed by the folds of a great cloak about his shoulders. Clearly signed by Grange on the left hand side of the base. On the right hand side the cast is inscribed as a 'cire perdue' (lost wax) by the Susse fréres foundry of Paris. Excellent condition with particularly good colour and patina.
A large stone version of the statue can be seen in Place Victor Hugo in Grenoble (near to the place of the composer’s birth) which was erected in 1953 to replace an earlier bronze statue removed and destroyed during the Nazi occupation of the city.
