15th.c. Style Tapestry of Woodcutters in a Forest

Large 15th.c. Flemish style woven tapestry wall hanging. 73" x 50", featuring a lively scene of woodcutters working in a forest or game park. Amongst the trees and foliage are to be found a surprising array of animals including, in the top left hand corner, a monkey! After an original Tournai tapestry now in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs Paris believed to have been created for Nicolas Rolin (Chancellor of Burgundy from 1422 to 1461). Rolin's coat of arms appears near the top of the tapestry and also on the collar of the hunting hound in the lower left hand corner. Excellent condition, lined with fabric and mounted onto a wooden baton for display.
