Japanese Shibayama Panel Screen c.1920

Superb early 20th.c. Japanese dressing screen c.1920. Four 22½" wide sections. Each featuring Shibayama work panel in carved abalone shell and bone modelled as different species of bird perched in a tree (a different tree on each panel) with beautifully observed leaves and blossom and smaller birds flying in the background. Against a black lacquered ground with a red border. Ebonised and carved hardwood frame with a carved and pierced frieze also featuring a bird at the top of each section. The rear of each panel features a hand painted tree branch with block printed blossom and falling leaves inlaid in bone against a striking red ground. Replacement brass hinges and some restoration to the head of the eagle, otherwise original throughout. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
