Large Zirhaki Pattern Kashmar Persian Carpet

Large carpet (115" x 95"), featuring an unusual asymmetrical pictorial design of large vases and ewers against a dense background of flowers amongst which are numerous lively and amusing birds. Multiple borders featuring Arabic script and more vases and bowls, flowers and birds. Note how some of the vases break the border giving them an sense of three dimensions. These pictorial elements, not unusually found in traditional Persian carpets are a unique feature of carpets produced in Kashmar in North Eastern Iran. Known as 'Zirhaki' pattern after the Farsi word meaning 'under the earth', they depict valuable items, typically ceramics, that are found in the ancient archaeological sites of Iran. Hand knotted in wool with a soft pile. Very good condition and good even colour.
