Pair of Gilded Armchairs by Waring & Gillow of Paris c.1920

Fine quality pair of Louis XVI style giltwood armchairs by Waring & Gillow of Paris c.1920. Padded backrest with shallow wings leading into arms with swept supports over a large webbed seat with deep feather filled cushions. Vintage upholstery in a rose gold Regency stripe silk. Superb giltwood frames with extensive carved detail, note the scrolling acanthus terminals to the arms and laurel frieze running below the seat. Raised on tapering carved and fluted legs front and rear. Original maker's labels for 'Waring et Gillow Ltd' 8 Rue Gluck Paris to the underside of both chairs. Presented as found in very good condition. Original gilded finish a little worn and rubbed through in places. Clean and perfectly serviceable upholstery with just very some minor wear.

One of the most celebrated names in the history of British furniture, Gillows opened their Paris showroom in 1906, retailing fine furniture and undertaking full interior design schemes for the city’s wealthiest families. The influential designer Paul Follot was a later director of the Paris branch.
