Set of Six Cherry Wood Chairs with Painted Backs c.1910

Delightful set of six cherrywood dining chairs with unusual painted decoration. Broad curving top rails with a carved detail at the top corners, over central splats with painted decoration within moulded edges and flanked with slim turned spindles. Each of the splats is hand painted in naive style with a different design, all featuring animals, several of which are familiar from Aesop's fables; the hare and the tortoise, the fox and the crow and the mouse helping the lion caught in a net. Woven rush seats (height 18") raised on square front legs and rear stiles with a slight curve a the foot for stability. Joined with unusual turned and tapering front stretchers and simple turned stretchers at the sides and rear. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
