Welsh Oak Box Settle dated 1732

Beautiful George II Welsh oak box settle dated 1732. Slightly sloped backrest with five flat panels set within moulded rails and mullions, between rear stiles with curving points to the tops. Simple shaped arms on turned supports. Seat made of two long boards, the front is loose lifting to reveal storage inside for boots and shoes etc. Note the remains of the long defunct iron hinges and the groove worn in the sides of the base by the action of opening seat. Oak panelled front, sides and back to the base. Original oak floor boards. Carved with the initials HH and the date 1732 at the centre of the backrest. The initials WW are also carved on the rear, possibly a maker's mark. Repairs to the feet, otherwise excellent condition and particularly good colour and patina to the timber. Restored, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
