Pair of Walnut Folding Savonarola Armchairs c.1900

Fine pair of Italian Renaissance style walnut Savonarola type folding armchairs c.1900. The backrests are removable allowing the chairs to fold for storage or transport with an ingenious scissor action. Particularly good examples of the form with very well carved Renaissance style decoration of grotesques and scrolling acanthus forms to the backrest. Carved arms (slightly different on each chair), terminating in round pommels with a separate loose ring to each. Shapely X frames with flat seats and lion's paw feet front and rear. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
