Painting of Highland Cattle by Robert Watson Dated 1888

Beautiful painting in oil on canvas by the acclaimed English artist Robert Watson (1855-1921) dated 1888. A herd of impressive highland cattle drink from a loch watched over by a figure in traditional Scottish costume on a white pony with an attentive collie dog beside him. In the background low cloud rolls across the craggy hillside to the right hand side whilst to the left the waters of the loch extend to low hills on the horizon. Very well painted with fine brushwork typical of Watson's detailed technique. Watson is well known for his highland scenes, though the inclusion of a human figure is quite unusual. Clearly signed in the lower right hand corner and dated 1888. In the original gilded wooden and gesso frame, with a Liverpool framer's label on the rear. Presented as found, with an old repair to the canvas (above the figure) and wear to the gilding on the frame.
