Large Oak Chest dated 1744
Very large oak coffer or dower chest of Northern European or possibly Scandinavian origin dated 1744. Domed lid with a deep moulded edge on the original long iron strap hinges with decorative detail. Over a deep chest with flared sides a small lidded compartment to one side (which forms a stay for the main lid when open) and slim shelf along the rear edge. Good decorative front carved with the inscription Sencke Sarden Anno 1744 over parquetry inlaid devices in contrasting timbers. With a large pierced steel escutcheon plate, carved detail and a pattern of punched stars. Note how the carved and punched decoration continues on the broad flared stiles, the shape of which emphasises and accentuates the size and bulk of the chest to impressive effect. More punched decoration to the sides and a lovely carved guilloche frieze along the bottom edge. Oak back and floor boards. Excellent original colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
