Large Indian Mughal Style Painted Panel
Large Mughal style Indian painting on fabric. 45" x 66" panel hand painted with a lively palace scene. The Emperor sits on his classic low throne platform below a canopy attended by a member of the harem whilst another woman, visible through a window or doorway, appears to poor oil on a flaming torch. In the upper portion of the panel, apparently a roof terrace, a woman on a similar low platform is comforted by two women (is the one in the green sari the same figure as the one with the torch?), another women dances and another points at a cloud (smoke perhaps) in the sky. Other interesting detail to note the caged bird, the lit candles in their lanterns (suggesting night time) and the dropped flower and fruit beside the woman on the platform. Lozenge shaped border with decorated spandrels in the corners and a floral border. Small hole in the border at the bottom of the image, otherwise good condition presented on a simple wooden stretcher.
