Carved Oak Coffer c.1880
16th.c. style carved oak coffer c.1880. Flat (rather than panelled) lid opening to reveal useful storage inside with a smaller compartment to the left hand side, the lid of works as a stay to hold open the coffer lid. Decorative front carved with Renaissance style carvings of Diana (goddess of hunting) and a deer in a frame flanked with winged grotesques with female heads and beast's feet. Guilloche frieze to the top rail, continued at the sides, with a pierced steel escutcheon at the centre. Acanthus leaves to the front stiles, raised and moulded side panels with carved leaf details at the corners. Deep carved moulding around the base, raised on a tall plinth. Very sturdy construction in solid oak throughout, could be used as a hall seat with storage. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
