Art Nouveau Side Cabinet by Miarnau of Barcelona c.1915

Very unusual Art Nouveau side cabinet produced by the company Meubles de Miarnau of Barcelona c.1915. Tall top with one long mirror and open shelves with raised sides and mirrored back panels. Over a base with a pink marble top, two open shelves and a cupboard with a single shelf inside. In walnut with carved and moulded detail highlighted in gold. Unusual decorative detail in a mix of influences, typical of 'Modernisme' or Catalan Art Nouveau, the famously exuberant and eclectic architectural style produced in Barcelona at this time. Gothic crenelated cornice, carved columns and trefoil pierced brackets. Plus beautiful Art Nouveau decoration to the door panel, note also the little detail at the top right hand corner of the long mirror. The carved and gilded decoration is also continued on the sides. Raised on flared bun feet. Maker's badge for Miarnau inside the door. With a repaired crack across the marble. Otherwise excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. The moulding above the mirror can be removed if preferred (which would reduce the height to 93").

Miarnau have link to Barcelona's most celebrated architect Antonio Gaudi through Alberto Gache, Consul of the Republic of Argentina in Barcelona. Gache ordered furniture from Miarnau for the fabulous painted Salon in his apartment on the first floor of Gaudi's famous Casa Milá where he lived from 1911-1919. A photograph of the Gache apartment features in the Miarnau catalogue of the time.
