Portrait of a Servant after William Jones of Bath c.1800
Oil on canvas portrait of a young black man in historical costume holding large a basket of fruit. An early 19th.c. copy in oil on canvas of an original painting by William Jones of Bath which is now in the collection of the Victoria Art Gallery Bath. The subject is believed to be an enslaved servant who worked in the famous Pump Room at Bath. Jones, best known as a painter of still lives was active in the city from 1769-1777. Presented as found, relaid onto canvas on wooden stretcher, with some minor surface wear well away from the face.
