Pair of Large Japanese Satsuma Ware Vases c.1920

Outstanding pair of large Japanese Meiji period Satsuma ware vases c.1920. Standing 18″ tall and densely decorated with a design of numerous figures and an elephant, much of it in relief and with extensive gilding and polychrome decoration. Marks to the base of each, and a printed paper label on the base of one vase, for "Maruni & Co, Isokami Dori 6, Chome, Kobe, Japan. Manufacturer & Dealer in all kinds of porcelain satsuma ware." Maruni ceased pottery production in 1938. Some very minor wear to the gilding in places, otherwise excellent condition.
