Narrow Giltwood Bookcase c.1890
Unusual late 19th.c. giltwood open bookcase or whatnot c.1890. Useful narrow dimensions, just 30" wide. Ideal as a towel stand in a bathroom perhaps. Serpentine shaped top with a moulded edge over four conforming shelves (max depth 13½"). Carved acanthus detail to the apron around the top and below the bottom shelf, scrolling corbels and flower heads carved in high relief to the front stiles top and bottom, scrolling acanthus front feet. Original gilded finish, heavily worn and rubbed through in places to reveal the red ground below. Shelves and back panel painted pale yellow. Obvious wear and old woodworm holes. Otherwise good condition, solid and sturdy, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
