Naive painting of Abraham & Isaac c.1870
Superb 19th.c. old testament bible scene painting 1870. Following a command from God the prophet Abraham prepares to sacrifice his son Isaac. The son points to the wood he has carried to make the fire on the altar upon which he will be sacrificed, whilst the flaming cauldron and sword lie ready on the ground. Ultimately God halted the sacrifice, Abraham's obedience was proven and Isaac was allowed to live. Painted in delightful naive style in oil on canvas with particularly good treatment of clouds and trees. Some obvious surface wear and a couple of patched repairs. Presented as found, unframed on a simple wooden stretcher.
