Giltwood Console Table c.1890

Quality late 19th.c. giltwood and marble top console table c.1890. useful small size, just 36" wide. Original and beautifully figured marble top with a shapely serpentine moulded edge. Superb giltwood base, the apron pierced and carved with scrolling acanthus leaves in high relief. Curving legs and stretcher carved to match. Note the asymmetrical position of the legs and stretcher, the left hand foot being 1½" closer to the wall than the right. Original gilded finish worn and rubbed through in places to reveal the red ground below. Some retouching to the legs where the gilt gesso is missing. Otherwise excellent condition.
