Crucifixion of Christ in Oil on Canvas c.1800
Early 19th.c. Continental School painting of the crucifixion of Christ c.1800. Full length image of Christ nailed to a cross in oil on canvas. Bleeding from his wounds and wearing the crown of thorns he raises his eyes to heaven. Particularly good treatment of the face and torso. Note also the dramatic sky and the buildings of Jerusalem on the horizon. The initials INRI pinned to the cross stand for the Latin inscription Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum, Jesus of Nazaruth, King of the Jews. Relaid onto canvas with some minor wear and a small missing portion of the surface to the right hand side of the cross. Presented unframed on a simple wooden stretcher.
