Large Welsh Dresser & Rack c.1800

Large George III Welsh dresser and rack from the Shropshire Welsh borders c.1800. An exceptional example, measuring eight feet long and seven feet high. Unusally configured plate rack with open shelves, cupboards and two rows of small spice drawers. Base (height 34″) with three large drawers over two slim drawers flanking a shaped apron and raised on tapering square stiles. Some fabulous decorative detail here particularly the inlaid ebony and boxwood star and palmate devices to the cupboard doors. Note how the ogee arch top on the centre door is repeated in the shape of the apron on the base below, also featuring an ebony inlaid detail above the point. Moulded cornice and rounded sides to the canopy, rope twist carved detail to the uprights either side of the side cupboards, moulded shelf fronts. Mahogany crossbanding to the doors, drawer fronts and apron, inlaid diamond shaped ebony escutcheons. The turned wooden knobs are later 19th.c. replacements. Oak sides, deal drawer linings and backboards.  Excellent condition with lovely rich colour and patina to the timber. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops, cupboard keys supplied.
