Large Diorama of the Sailing Ship Glynllifon c.1900
A superb large folk art diorama of the three masted barque Glynllifon c.1900. Shown under a full spread of sail and flying the Union Jack and various signal flags. On a modelled sea with painted sailboat and paddle steamer on the horizon. Presented behind glass in a fine birdseye maple veneered frame with gilded slip. Excellent condition.
The Glynllifon (named after the large estate and house near Caernarfon in North Wales) was a merchant ship involved in the copper and phosphate trade from the Americas. Built in 1873 in Dumbarton Scotland by the McMillan shipyard. She was recorded as lost after sailing from South Carolina in January 1879 after which neither the ship or the 11 crew were ever seen again.
