Oriental Camphorwood Chest c.1930

Early 20th.c. Chinese camphorwood chest of unusual design c.1930. Hinged lid with a raised centre over a large chest with rounded sides. The unusual form is accentuated by the decoration on the front of the chest which features two scenes of traditional Chinese boats set within circular borders with traced of gold paint to the background. The carved decoration continues on the top, sides and (unusually) rear of the chest. Note the carved hand grips for lifting incorporated into the design on the front of the lid and at the sides of the chest. In solid camphorwood, a fragrant and pest resistant timber traditionally used for travelling chests as it helped protect the contents during passage. With a decorative brass lockplate and shaped feet. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
