Blonde Turtle Shell.

Fine example of a ‘blonde’ loggerhead turtle shell. Prized by 18th and 19th century sailors for their meat, the leftover turtle’s shells were often presented to the crew who to occupy idle moments would remove the patterned outer layers and polish the carapace below to a smooth bone white colour. The resulting shell would be presented to loved ones as an unusual and decorative souvenir.
We have had several such shells over the years but I can’t remember coming across one before with the underside of the shell still attached. Excellent condition, presented on a associated wooded stand.
