Unusual Marble Top Pedestal Cabinet.

Would love to know the original purpose of this rather unusual piece of furniture. Marble top pedestal cabinet with a glass sides. Open the door and the floor of the cabinet moves too and with it a wire liner on the open side. Adding to the mystery is a single very slim drawer below the marble, sloped inside the lip to make it easier to slide out the contents (coins or stationery perhaps). With no sign that there was ever a lock to the door the intended contents of the cabinet were presumably not of high value. Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.
22″ diameter marble top with a moulded edge, curved glass sides and tall ogee moulded octagonal plinth. Some wear to the marble and missing a small portion of the wire work. Otherwise excellent condition, original through with a lovely rich colour to the timber. Simply cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
Dimensions: diameter 22″, height 38″.
