Purchased locally as a collection last week this charming 18th.c. coopered oak spirit barrel with iron chain link handle and traces of original paint plus two 18th.c. drinking horns. Due to the brittle nature of the material (and the state of the people using them!) the horns are rare survivors. The better of the two features a stoppered end and a profusion of inscribed names and dates, the earliest being 1730.
The barrel is 8″ diameter x 9½” tall, the horns are both approx 13″ long.

Ingenious little early 19th.c. mahogany swivel top ‘Davenport’ writing desk c.1830 in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster. The Gillows davenport design is notable for having a swivel top which rotates 90 degrees to allow anyone using the desk to sit comfortably with their knees under the writing surface.  Sloped writing surface with a sliding and hinged pen drawer in the side, the top lifts to reveal a fitted interior of three small drawers.
