West African Carved Table & Pair Stools c.1950.

Remarkable suite of West African carved furniture comprising a pair of tall yoke seated stools and matching round top  table. Of unusual design, rather than the low form of traditional furniture, the height of the stools suggests they were probably produced as export items in the first half of the 20th.c. Construction however is of traditional technique with both the table and chairs being carved from single blocks of timber, rather than being jointed. The legs of both table and chairs are carved as male and female ceremonial figures in pointed head gear, the men in long gowns, and carrying musical instruments and a small round vessel. Note also the shark motif carved on the sides of the stools. With an old repair to the seat of one stool, otherwise excellent colour and condition.
