Unusual Pair of Chinese Armchairs c.1920.

Remarkable pair of early 20th.c. colonial era Anglo-Chinese armchairs c.1920. Large and sturdy chairs with solid hongmu frames and veined grey marble panels to the backrests, ideal for a hot climate. Featuring an interesting merging of design styles. The scrolling arms, curving apron and cabriole shaped legs are borrowed from Western furniture but the timber, the use of marble and the board seat within a cleated surround is Chinese. Note also how the frames are beautifully carved to represent sprouting bamboo canes, a traditional Chinese motif,  whilst the backrests feature a more typically Western pierced frieze of vine leaves and grapes.  Later seat cushions in a blue silk with oriental detail. Excellent original colour and condition, simply cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
