Pair of Japanese Carved and Lacquered Panels c.1890.

Beautiful pair of Japanese Meiji period panels c.1890. Decorated with scenes of two large birds perched on tree branches whilst smaller finches flit around them. Carved with infinite skill in ivory or bone and laid onto a blue lacquered ground. Extraordinary detail to the feathers, tree bark and leaves and great use of negative space. With a carved hanko or signature seal (for Yuka or Yukawa – possibly Yukawa Shodo) to both panels and paper labels to the rear. Good original condition with some minor wear and one quite deep scratch to the background on one panel. Presented in later gilt frames, ready to hang.
