Late 18th.c. French Walnut Panetiere Or Bread Safe c.1770.

Beautiful late 18th.c. French walnut panetiere or bread safe c.1770. A superb example of the form with beautiful carved and shaped rails and turned spindles to the front and sides. Note the carved wheat sheaf detail to the little lockable door in the front which also retains the original oversized steel hinge, pierced escutcheon plate lock and key. Turned finials and carved scroll detail to the feet. Beautiful colour to the timber and excellent condition with original top, back and floor boards. The holes in the rear are a typical feature of the panetiere and allowed it to be secured high on a wall (away from pests and children) from where it could be brought to the table at mealtime.
