Large Marble Top Semainier Chest of Drawers c.1860.

Unusually large 19th.c. French rosewood and marble top semainier chest of drawers c.1860. At 44½” wide it is considerably larger that many we see. Original rouge griotte marble top with a thumb moulded edge over seven drawers (one for each day of the week – hence the name semainier). Beautifully figured rosewood veneers across the front and sides laid in a symmetrical pattern with contrasting borders and inlaid stringing. Original fine quality gilded and pierced ormolu escutcheons and mounts to the drawer fronts, shoulders, apron and feet. Chestnut back panels and drawer linings with blue water pattern moire fabric. Excellent colour and ccondition with some minor repairs to the veneers. Cleaned and polished in our workshops. Original locks, key supplied.
