Georgian Mahogany Linen Press c.1790

Splendid George III mahogany linen press c.1790. Two door cupboard top fitted with five large sliding shelves on a separate base with two short and two long drawers of graduated height. Crisp moulded cornice with carved detail and flame mahogany frieze both continued at the sides. Oval symmetrically arranged flame mahogany veneers to the door panels with inlaid ebony stringing and crossbanded surrounds all laid onto solid mahogany groundwork. Cockbeaded solid mahogany drawer fronts retaining their original brass handles with unusual enamelled centres featuring illustrations of Classical urns. Ogee mouldings at the waist and the bottom edge, raised on bracket feet front and rear. Solid mahogany sides. With a delightful pencil annotation under the bottom drawer 'John Rowland fecit (made) Anno Domini 1792'. A really lovely example of the form, in excellent condition and with a very good even colour. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Cupboard key supplied.
